Have you spotted an orangutan cycling around Amber Valley?

Friday 28 Aug 2026

Alfreton man Peter McEvoy is preparing to cycle 425 miles from Sheffield to Paris dressed as an orangutan, raising money for the Sumatran Orangutan Society.

Peter has supported SOS since 2020 and came up with the idea after reading about other supporters fundraising for the charity. A keen long-distance cyclist but not a runner, he decided that an orangutan costume might be the perfect way to get people talking about the animals and rainforest he is trying to help protect.

He is aiming to raise £1,500.

People may already have spotted Peter practising around the area in his full orangutan outfit. Video footage is available of him cycling around Derbyshire, including past the Welcome to Derbyshire sign, along with still photographs.

Peter will begin his challenge on Monday 7 September, cycling from Sheffield to Derby before continuing towards Paris. He is due to arrive at Derby Market Place between 3.30pm and 5pm, where he will be available for photographs and interviews.

The challenge will eventually take him 425 miles to Paris, where he hopes to finish at the Eiffel Tower on 13 September.
